Maca consumption as a superfood dates back at least 3000 years, and possibly as long as 10,000 years ago. When the Spanish explorer Captain de Soto landed in Peru in 1549, he was gifted Maca by the Peruvian Indians to help the European livestock cope nutritionally and reproduce successfully in this harsh new land. As word of Maca’s health-giving properties spread, the Chinchayochas Indians apparently began substituting Maca for the gold and silver previously demanded by the conquerors to be shipped back to Spain for use by Royalty.
Maca’s botanical name is Lepidium meyenii,Walpers (after German botanist Gerhard Walpers) and is also known as Lepidium peruvianum,Chacon after Peruvian researcher Dr. Gloria Chacon.
Maca is a sexy heart shaped root vegetable of the Brassicaceae (cruciferous) family that looks like a radish but grows like a sweet potato -- the colour varies from creamy yellow or light pink to dark purple or black.
Maca is a whole food – in fact, a functional food who’s label ‘superfood’ is due to the many and varied components of its nutritional composition including numerous minerals, vitamins, 18 amino acids, essential fatty acids, and sterols.
Maca also contains glucosinolates (known for antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties) and the unique alkaloids macaina 1-4, macaenes and macamides, found no where else in the botanical kingdom, whose properties are just beginning to be understood by modern science.

Why choose Power Super Foods Maca?
The Department of Agriculture in Peru confirm that in the last 12 years, Power Super Foods have continued to grow their Maca business are now the largest exporter of Maca from Peru to Australia!
We asked Paul from Power Super Foods what was the reason for his success…
“Well, we have been doing this for the past 12 years. We only buy once per year at the first harvest, which we believe is the best.
The harvested Maca root is sun dried, powdered, bottled and stored in a climate controlled environment immediately until dispatched. This climate controlled environment is a key factor which we maintain all the way through the delivery, storing and packing process.
We pack our Maca in house in our purpose built facility – not out sourced – under strictly supervised conditions using experienced staff. While there may be variances from season to season, we rely on tests and product analysis to ensure that the raw material is up to our usual high standard.
Our Maca is never exposed to air or heat so that is maintains integrity and it is never irradiated.
We take care of our Maca in a certain way so that it is the best that it possibly can be."
But why is it so much cheaper than other brands?
We wanted to make it affordable for everyone.
